According to the Old Testament in the book of
Deuteronomy (verse 15: 1, 9), it was on that day that the practice of "Shemittah" or "remission" occurred.
The Hebrew word Shemittah means to
"let fall" or "release" and refers to a day
when debt is let go and debts between
the people of Israel were forgiven.
